About Us

HackJPS is a virtual 4-day hackathon that is being led by students from JP Stevens High School from September 18 to September 21, 2020. We are open to both high school and middle school students, and participation is not limited to those with a large background in programming - we hope to draw students from all skill levels, and even encourage participants who have not programmed before. In fact, given that our event is now virtual due to Covid-19, we have no limit on capacity so we really want a lot of people to try out this unique experience. Ultimately, HackJPS will be a really fun experience for students - we will have fun online minigames, music rooms, learning rooms, and other ways for participants to mingle amongst themselves.

What is a hackathon?
A Hackathon is an event where students passionate about STEM come together to create a “hack” in teams. This “hack” could be anything that is created from scratch between the time slot provided using a computer or technology. At the end of the 4 days, the best “hack” is chosen to be the winner of HackJPS!

Who can attend?
All high school and middle school students with an interest in STEM are welcome to attend!

How much does it cost?
The event is completely free to attend! Our amazing sponsors help us cover the cost to run HackJPS. You have nothing to lose if you attend.

When is it?
The event will run from September 18th - 21st. The exact timings will be finalized shortly.

How will an online hackathon work?
It will proceed very similarly to a normal hackathon, except all communication will occurr online. Through Youtube live streams, Discord, and many other platforms, we hope to bridge the gap between everyone and create a vibrant atmosphere.

Do I need coding/hackathon experience to attend?
Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of their coding experience. There will be many mentors and workshops to guide you along the way!

What will I need?
A laptop, chargers, any hardware for your project, stable wifi connection, and most importantly an open mind to learn new things!

Do I need a team before I can sign up?
If you don’t have a team before the event, don’t worry! We encourage you to meet new students during or at the beginning of the event through Discord. The maximum number of hackers on a team is 5.

What can I win?
Prizes range from $25 to $600. Checkout our Devpost for more information on prizes. Regardless, you’ll be able to meet new friends, find new contacts, and create unique projects. The experience you gain is much more valuable than any monetary prize.

Do I need to be working the entire weekend?
Absolutely not. Participants can choose how much time they invest into projects or events.

Do I have to attend all the workshops/events?
Participants are not expected to partake in all the events listed on the schedule. They can attend any of the events they want or none of the events. The events are there for participants to have fun or learn something new.
